In Rome, access can matter as much as distance. Many historic streets lie inside the ZTL, where larger trucks may not enter during the day, so a flat in Trastevere can need a smaller vehicle or a longer carry than one outside the centre.

Permits, packing and furniture assembly are added to your offer only if they are needed or booked.

Price example

Example: a 1-bed flat from Munich to Rome

A couple moves a 1-bed flat of about 12 m³ from Munich to a flat outside the ZTL in Rome. The truck drives via the Brenner and needs a permit to occupy the street while unloading. This is a worked example based on our starting prices, not a completed customer move.

The permit is requested from the Municipio responsible for the address. A €16 revenue stamp, processing fees and a daily occupation charge apply on top of the moving price.

At a glance

Germany to Rome at a glance

Every road route from Germany to Rome crosses the Alps. The Brenner is the usual crossing, and in 2026 it needs extra planning.

  • Distance:about 930 km from Munich, 1,510 km from Berlin and 1,670 km from Hamburg, via the Brenner.
  • Collection to delivery:two to three days, depending on the start city and traffic at the Brenner.
  • Austria:vehicles up to 3.5 t need a vignette; heavier trucks pay the distance-based GO toll. The Brenner motorway has its own section toll.
  • Brenner in 2026:the Lueg bridge on the A13 runs on one lane per direction on many days, and Tyrol holds back trucks over 7.5 t on set dosing days.
  • Italian weekend rules:trucks over 7.5 t may not drive on Sundays and public holidays, 09:00–22:00 from October to May.
  • Customs:none: household goods move between Germany and Italy without customs formalities.
ZTL and parking

ZTL, Fascia Verde and parking in Rome

Rome restricts traffic in the historic centre and in a wider low-emission ring. We check your address before we confirm the plan.

ZTL in the historic centre

The Centro Storico and Trastevere are limited-traffic zones. Even with a goods permit, trucks over 3.5 t may not enter between 07:00 and 20:00, so we plan the vehicle size and time for addresses inside the ZTL.

Tridente until 7 December

In the Tridente area and nearby sectors, goods vehicles may not enter between 08:00 and 18:00 until 7 December 2026. Removals there need a specific authorisation from the city.

Fascia Verde

Rome’s low-emission ring bans older diesel vehicles, up to Euro 3, from Monday to Saturday, and newer diesels on smog-alert days. We plan with a vehicle that meets the rules on your moving day.

Permit to occupy the street

To reserve space for the truck, the Municipio responsible for your address issues a permit to occupy public ground for a move. We request it once your date is fixed.

Registering in Italy

Anagrafe and codice fiscale

Residence registration

If you stay longer than three months, register with the Comune’s population register (anagrafe). You need work, or enough income and health insurance; registration is free.

Codice fiscale

Italy’s tax code is needed for most contracts. EU citizens apply at any Agenzia delle Entrate office with a passport or ID card.

No customs

Household goods from Germany need no customs declaration, because Germany and Italy are both in the EU single market.

Your invoice

You receive an invoice from Smoover that you can use for reimbursement by your employer or for your tax return.

Services

Packing, furniture assembly and practical extras

Pack your own boxes and leave the heavy furniture to the team, or hand over the whole household while you deal with everything else. Each service is agreed and priced in your fixed-price offer.

Packing and unpacking

Full packing, or just the kitchen, books and fragile items. We protect furniture, label boxes by room and can unpack at delivery. Our packing guide helps with what you prepare yourself.

Furniture dismantling and assembly

We dismantle wardrobes, beds and tables before loading and rebuild them in Rome. New IKEA furniture can be assembled at the new home too.

Large TVs and valuable pieces

Share screen sizes and photos so we can plan suitable protection. Flag paintings and antiques in advance; see our art transport service.

Temporary storage

If your new home in Rome isn’t ready when you have to leave, we store your belongings and deliver later. Storage period and redelivery are agreed in your offer.

Insurance

Every Smoover move is insured through Allianz. Different levels of cover are available depending on the value of your belongings; we explain them before you book.

Leaving your old flat

Where available, add move-out painting and final cleaning for the days after collection, so you can hand back the keys without organising a second company.
