From southern Germany, northern Italy is one of the shorter international moves: Munich to Milan is about 530 km. Rome adds a good 400 km, and in the historic centre, access to the flat often matters more for the effort than the distance.

Loading permits, packing and furniture assembly are added to your offer only if they are needed or booked.

Price example

Example: a 1-bed flat from Munich to Milan

A tenant moves her 1-bed flat of about 13 m³ from Munich to Milan. The new flat is inside Area C, so the daily charge applies on delivery day. This is a worked example based on our starting prices, not a completed customer move.

Access and loading-space fees come on top of the moving price.

At a glance

Germany to Italy at a glance

Italy is in the EU, so there is no customs – as long as the route does not cross Switzerland. What needs planning is access in the city centres and registering locally.

  • Distance:about 530 km from Munich to Milan and 930 km to Rome; about 1,140 km from Berlin to Milan and 1,510 km to Rome; about 1,670 km from Hamburg to Rome.
  • Collection to delivery:one to three days – from Munich to Milan usually one to two, to Rome two to three days.
  • Tolls:in Austria a vignette or the GO toll plus a separate toll on the Brenner motorway; Italian motorways are tolled.
  • Truck rules:Sunday and night driving bans in Austria and Italy only apply to trucks over 7.5 t, so our moving trucks of up to 7.5 t are not affected.
  • Registration:after three months, register with the town’s population register (anagrafe).
  • Customs:none on the route via Austria: household goods stay within the EU single market.
Route

Why we drive via the Brenner Pass

From Munich to Milan, the route through Switzerland is a few kilometres shorter. For a household move, the Brenner route through Austria is still usually the better choice.

No customs transit

Switzerland is outside the EU customs territory. Household goods on their way to Italy would have to be declared for transit there, with import duties temporarily secured. Via Austria, the move stays entirely within the EU single market.

Tolls in Austria

Vehicles up to 3.5 t need a vignette and pay a separate €12.50 section toll on the A13 Brenner motorway. Heavier trucks pay the distance-based GO toll.

Lueg Bridge in 2026

On the Brenner motorway, the Lueg Bridge is down to one lane on many days in 2026. We build in buffer time and confirm your delivery window accordingly.

Driving bans

Night and weekend bans in Tyrol and Italy’s Sunday ban apply to trucks over 7.5 t. Our moving trucks of up to 7.5 t are not affected.

City access

Access and loading space in Milan and Rome

Italian city centres regulate access strictly. We check the address in advance and apply for what is needed before we confirm your date.

Milan: Area C

The centre is charged on working days from 7:30 to 19:30, and a day ticket costs €7.50. Vehicles longer than 7.5 m need an exemption, which we take into account when choosing the vehicle.

Milan: Area B and loading space

In the Area B low-emission zone, diesel trucks need Euro 6 in 2026. We secure the loading space outside your building with a temporary permit to use the street.

Rome: street permit

Using the street for a move is requested from the responsible Municipio. A €16 revenue stamp, processing fees and a daily charge for the space apply.

Rome: ZTL and historic centre

Trucks over 3.5 t may only enter the limited-traffic zone (ZTL) in the Centro Storico and Trastevere during the day with a permit. In the Tridente, until 7 December 2026, moves also need a specific authorisation.

Registering in Italy

Anagrafe, codice fiscale and your car

Population register

If you stay longer than three months, register with your town’s population register (anagrafe). You need work, or sufficient means plus health insurance; registration is free.

Codice fiscale

EU citizens get the tax code with form AA4/8 and an ID at any Agenzia delle Entrate office. You need it for your lease, electricity and a bank account, for example.

Your car

A car with German plates has to be re-registered in Italy within three months of taking up residence there.

No customs

Household goods from Germany need no customs declaration, because Germany and Italy are both in the EU single market.

Services

Packing, furniture assembly and practical extras

Pack your own boxes and leave the heavy furniture to the team, or hand over the whole household while you deal with everything else. Each service is agreed and priced in your fixed-price offer.

Packing and unpacking

Full packing, or just the kitchen, books and fragile items. We protect furniture, label boxes by room and can unpack at delivery. Our packing guide helps with what you prepare yourself.

Furniture dismantling and assembly

We dismantle wardrobes, beds and tables before loading and rebuild them in Italy. New IKEA furniture can be assembled at the new home too.

Large TVs and valuable pieces

Share screen sizes and photos so we can plan suitable protection. Flag paintings and antiques in advance; see our art transport service.

Temporary storage

If your new home in Italy isn’t ready when you have to leave, we store your belongings and deliver later. Storage period and redelivery are agreed in your offer.

Insurance

Every Smoover move is insured through Allianz. Different levels of cover are available depending on the value of your belongings; we explain them before you book.

Leaving your old flat

Where available, add move-out painting and final cleaning for the days after collection, so you can hand back the keys without organising a second company.
